Reclassified to L2 and renamed. The L2-1_DR consensus sequence encodes a gag protein (position 311-1216) and a 1027-aa pol protein (positions 1220-4300), which contains an AP endonuclease (aa positions 72-225) and a reverse transcriptase (aa positions 559-796). The 302-aa gag protein is distantly related to proteins encoded by ORF1 in known L2-like elements from chicken, pufferfish and turtle. The consensus sequence was reconstructed from 10 copies that are ~1% divergent from it. There are 7,000 matches to L2-1_DR in the zebrafish genome, many representing ancestral or otherwise related sequences.
