ERV2-I_DR is an internal portion of the ERV2_DR endogenous retrovirus. It is flanked by 99% identical ERV2-LTR_DR. ERV2_DR belongs to the class I of endogenous retroviruses (4-bp TSD). It encodes ERV2p, a 455-aa gag-like protein that is closely related to this from ERV1_DR. The C-terminal portion of this protein includes the zinc knuckle motif present in gag proteins of many retroviruses. ERV2-I_DR is 72% identical to ERV1-I_DR.
