TIRANT belongs to the Gypsy superfamily and it's most close to the ZAM endogenous retrovirus. TIRANT_I, an internal portion, encodes gag (position 1449-2582), pol (2537-6088) and env (6089-7690) polyproteins. There is a serine tRNA binding site overlapping 3'-terminal nucleotide of the LTR. In situ hybridization to salivary glands chromosomes showed evidence of the mobile nature of the element . TIRANT induces duplications of 4-bp long GC-rich target sites .
