GYPSY12_I is an internal portion of the GYPSY12 endogenous retrovirus. Its long terminal repeat is GYPSY12_LTR. GYPSY12_I is flanked by 1% divergent LTRs. Therefore, the age of GYPSY12 can be estimated as ~0.3 Myr. tRNA-derived PBS starts at position 35 (there are several GYPSY12-like subfamilies that have the same feature). GYPSY12, OSVALDO and ULYSSES retroviruses from D. buzzatii and D. virilis, respectively, form a distinctive group of GYPSY-like retroviruses. GAG and POL encoded by GYPSY12_I are slightly damaged by several mutations. GYPSY12-GAGp shares common structural motifs with GAGs encoded by HIVs. GYPSY12-POLp is composed of protease, reverse transcriptase and endonuclease.
