DMRT1A belongs to the R1 clade of non-LTR retrotransposons. It has two ORFs. ORF1 encodes a putative nucleic acid binding protein. This protein is most close to the proteins encoded by ORF1s in the I elements found in Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila teissieri. However, its reverse transcriptase encoded by ORF2 is most close to the reverse transcriptase encoded by RT1, RT2 and SART1 non_LTR retrotransposons found in Anopheles gambiae and Bombyx mori. DMRT1A copies are flanked by ~12-bp target site duplications.
