MER85 (DF0000977)

PiggyBac DNA transposon, MER85 subfamily (non-autonomous)

Description

MER85 has 13 bp TIRs, and putative "TTAA" TSDs. This is one of the most recently active DNA transposons in the human genome. Anecdotally, the "domesticated", simian-specific transposase gene PGBD3 (PiggyBac- Derived 3) is flanked by MER85-related elements. Note that MER stands for MEdium Reiteration frequency interspersed repeat. As such, MERs as a group are a grab bag of DNA transposons and retrotransposons.
