The original MER106 element was unclassified. MER106A has been classified as a hAT-like DNA transposon based on identification of 14 bp imperfect, terminal inverted repeats, and 8 bp target site duplications (with a preference of NTCTAGAN). MER stands for MEdium Reiteration frequency interspersed repeat. As such, MERs as a group are a grab bag of DNA transposons and retrotransposons.
