HERVL66 is flanked by the long terminal repeat LTR66. The vast number of HERVL66 copies have multiplied non-autonomously (multiple copies contain deletions in coding regions and stop codons at the same positions). HERVL66 encodes dUTPase and envelope proteins. However, the reverse transcriptase is truncated at the N-terminus; and Gag is deleted. Only a single instance appears to preserves these two regions.
